Update to this post Always trust your instincts.
Before you can really understand my situation, you have to hear about my past.
Three years ago I started college. I didn't have any friends and I had resigned myself to just being lonely. Then I met Evan and we immediately clicked as friends. Through Evan I met Moon, a tiny asian girl who work half her weight in mystic looking jewelry. I also met Nathan, who quickly became my boyfriend because we were so compatible. Now let me tell you about Kate; she was the huge. She was overweight, but she was also at least 6 feet tall, and smelled like the worst body odor imaginable. She also had a weird obsession with death and taxidermy she had no problem gushing about for hours. And despite all this she ended up being incredibly charismatic. After hanging out a few times, Kate did a spiritual reading on me and told me about my aura and what not, I took that stuff as nonsense but I wanted to be polite. One thing about Kate is, she always had a group of people around her, and I found out that there were people from Kate and Nathan's old town that had moved hours and hours to be near this girl. There were also a couple people who hated Kate, but I never met them, just heard stories about the losers they "kicked out" of their "family" as they called it. But I never really saw anyone get kicked out, people just stopped showing up.
For example, I had a very good friend who I introduced to the group a few months in. My friend openly mocked Kate due to her strange beliefs in spirituality. My friend stopped coming around after she found a box of tarot cards inexplicably placed on her bed when she got home after seeing me. When she opened the box, the only card inside was the "The Tower". Kate blamed the spirits.
I'm going to skip over a lot of stuff here, we were friends for a while, we all ended up living together in a small apartment, and the spirituality stuff started ramping up very slowly until it got to this point where it was completely absurd stuff, like Kate claimed she was actually an angel and could talk to other angels, and that Moon, Evan, and Nathan were connected to her intimately in every single one of her past lives, but we all just accepted it as fact because Kate gave us proof. Her angels would talk to us through ouija boards and tell us stuff about dreams we'd had, or things we hand't told Kate or Kate wouldn't have known yet. She would tell me dreams I had were "visions" and she'd repeat certain things from the dream she couldn't have known.
There will be some more fast forwarding here, but at this point it's normal for us all to spend hours at night doing magic together and chanting or doing drum circles(yes, drum circles late at night in an apartment building). Kate and Moon took this even further after everyone else was asleep by rolling on the floor speaking in tongues and doing ritualistic cutting, they even kept a large kit filled with different size and types of scalpels in the "magic room". Kate cut me once while I was asleep, when I woke up and started yelling she acted like she was in a trance and never admitted to doing it, claiming she must have been overtaken by her "dark persona". I started locking the door after that.
Nathan became a zombie, he was a shell of the person I first met and it showed. I started trying to figure out why he was like that, and I realized it was because of Kate. She treated him terribly, often lying about things that had happened to make him feel he remembered wrong, or literally putting her hands on his mouth to make him stop questioning her. The best example of this is after she was fired for her job for missing too many days because she was "healing from spiritual injuries", so she delegated paying all the rent and bills to Nathan. After I realized how quickly he shut down and just did what she said and I was really afraid she could do that to someone. I don't know if this was at the point that the illusion was broken for me or not but I stopped believing in any magic shortly after, although I never let anyone know I was faking. I watched and gathered evidence and trying to plant some sort of seed of doubt about Kate in Nathan's mind. One day when we were alone, I showed him books about cults and sociopaths and abuse and gaslighting and everything terrifying she was doing, and he knew right away that I was right and we needed to get out of there. Our departure was planned for the next day when Nathan and I got off work, because I knew everyone else would be out of the apartment that day.
When we entered the apartment, Evan, Moon, and Kate were sitting on the couch directly facing us, silent and staring. Kate broke the silence by saying to me, "I should have just killed you when I found out what you were." Kate went on to deliver a list of my offenses, given to her straight from her angels. This list included being an evil demon, casting love spells on Nathan, casting curses to give Kate depression or make her car get stolen, spells to manipulate Moon and Evan into being friends with me at all, just a lot of insane stuff about how I was evil and trying to take everyone away. They were all screaming at this point and I was scared, so I just started grabbing my important stuff to leave, and that's when I noticed the bathroom. The walls were covered in symbols, painted in crusty, dry blood. I had mine and Nathan's documents in hand already so I just grabbed him by the hand and ran out the door. When we were a bit away from the apartment, I heard Evan say "You should have just let me kill her" and Kate just told him, "That's what the curse is for."
And that was two years ago. Come current day and we haven't had contact with them since then. It was difficult at first for us. We both have pretty severe anxiety and sometimes still even panic attacks from the whole situation. Sometimes I think about it and I just start shaking and I can't stop for hours. I don't believe I'm cursed or that ghosts are after me, I'm scared that an actual human that exists can even be like she is. I honestly 100% believe if we hadn't left when we did we would have been killed.
So, I'm all messed up in the head because of it, and that's why I thought what I saw a few nights ago was a hallucination of sorts. I thought I was being paranoid, seeing a flash of a terrifying man with grey hair inside my own house, I must just be projecting internal conflicts or some sort of psychological mumbo-jumbo by making up a random monster.
But I decided to start trusting my gut and start doing some research.
I found Kate's spiritual blog, which hasn't been updated since sometime in March. It's mostly all crazy ramblings about her angels and there's a few very long posts talking about some female demon that sound very much like someone describing me, these posts also talk about how she "couldn't save him from [the demon]". There were also some directly mentioning names about how she corrupted Nathan and Evan and now they "had to be saved".
On a whim, I researched this "haunted", abandoned, hotel with a messed up history that Kate used to take us do to do seances. And I found a news article from last month. According to the article there was a group murder/suicide and six people died. In the article, there was a picture of a group which was taken the night of the incident. Most of the faces were blurred out, but I recognized Evan and Moon in the picture, they always had very unique styles. Right in the middle of them, is the only unblurred face, the hair was definitely shorter but there was no mistaking Kate.
The article said Kate is the prime suspect in this case and she's being sought for questioning. There was another photo under the article, it was grainy surveillance footage from a gas station, and it's the last photo they have of Kate. It shows her at a gas station, presumably filling up her car, all while her clothes are covered in dark red splatter. And her hair is this awful, familiar, grey color.
I already called the police and told them about the cult and how I knew Kate and this detective wants me to come in and tell him tomorrow. He had an officer stationed outside my house after we talked on the phone. Nathan has been at a "no phones allowed" work retreat for the past two weeks, so he has no idea what's going on here. I don't even know how I'm going to begin to explain my new findings.
All I know is that I'm sure as hell not going home.
