14 year old Asian, I'm getting a haircut soon and don't know what to say to the barber.

I last got my hair cur during march break, so I've definitely been pushing it lately, So I'm going to get a haircut and I'm looking to my sides and back trimmed and likely my top cut back a half inch or so. This is what my hair looks like now http://m.imgur.com/a/9izXl

I like the look of it when it's up, but my sides are just too long and now I look like a lion. I have very straight asian hair and I haven't been to the barber many times in my life because my mom used to cut my hair. (Poorly)

I would like to have it up, but it ends up look bad from the side because my hair is so stiff. Any tips or alternate styles are appreciated. Something like this http://i.imgur.com/vW3Sx2z.jpg I wouldn't be afraid to try.

I have no pomade, all I have is hair gel and wax.
