I've always been a big fan of both Louis CK and his show. But with the first 4 seasons of his show, there were times where I zoned out, or I had to force myself to pay attention, because I just wasn't enjoying an episode.
With Season 5 I never felt that way once. It was a non-stop, tour de force or surrealism and hilarity. It really felt to me like Louie hit his stride this season.
I really think the first 4 seasons he had a lot to prove, he wanted to be homage to Woody, and Lynch, he wanted to make some serious art w/ a comedy twist. But in Season 5 he lets his hair down and celebrates his accomplishment, and does whatever the fuck he wants.
Season 5 is almost completely devoid of the Woody Allen stylistic stuff, and probably even more heavy on the David Lynch. But it also feels like for once all of his influences come together (including Robert Downey SR.), and he finally has his own unique style.
Season 5 is the closest thing to his own "Putney Swope".
