So, I've had my hair short for ten years. As in, pixie cuts, mohawks, the kind of short where I could get up and go after just teasing my hair with a little pomade, no fuss.
I've let it grow since late last year, and it's down to my shoulders now. I was kind of looking forward to having long, pretty, girly hair again, but its been an exercise in frustration for a few reasons- one, it's frizzy and thin and weak, and I've tried probably dozens of repair shampoos and conditioners, special rejuvenating creams, argan oil (which just made it greasy)- nothing has worked.
There's a complicating factor- I have pretty severe plaque psoriasis all over my scalp. Part of why I grew my hair out was because it was easier for other people to notice with the short hair- but now that it's long, I've found that my hair is just...falling out. Like, not in giant clumps or anything, but more hair is falling out than I would have expected. So I don't know if there's even a shampoo or conditioner or magic hair mask that can combat that. I don't heat style because I don't want to damage it further; it has a bit of natural wave to it, but I've only curled it for special occasions like, twice, and only with a curling iron. If I try to use curlers or something like that, it literally looks like I had a five year old give me a perm. Frizz city.
And just to add to the problems, after ten years of 'ruffle and go' short hair, I'm clueless to styling. My hair spends most of the time in a ponytail because it's just not pretty, and I don't know what to do with it. I'm afraid to do any major styling because I really don't want it getting more damaged or maybe more of it falling out. I dye it maybe twice a year, but always with the dyes that don't have harsh chemicals in them, because if I use the ones with chemicals it feels like someone dumped gasoline on my head and tossed a lit match on it (thank you, psoriasis).
Any advice? Or should I just go back to shorter hair and save my head the torture?
